Lost & Found

A few weeks ago we lost our GPS. We figured it must have been stolen out of my car, since that is the only place we keep it. I do lock the car when I go out, but with my pregnancy brain I would not be surprised if I'd forgotten once. Anyway, I felt horribly guilty, and I ransacked both cars several times looking for it. (Side note: It's a GPS. If it's stolen, why on earth can't the company track it down? Am I the only one who has wondered this?)Well, a couple days ago Andrew grins at me in the car and hands me the GPS! Turns out he found it jammed underneath the passenger seat- where I had looked. And looked. And looked. I don't think he'll ever let me hear the end of it. But I'm just really happy it's back, and we hadn't bought a new one.

Oh, and here is a picture of Daddy & Dory. Her shirt says 'Daddy's Girl'.

Dream of Space, Part 7 - Pretty Things

I have to say I was really looking forward to last night. I'd had plans to photograph a couple of really pretty things - that is until Dory gave me an opportunity to point the camera at another "pretty thing". Comet Lulin was in conjunction with (really close to) Saturn. First, last, and only chance to see (and photograph) these two colorful jewels together in the sky.

Here's a shot I took of her last Saturday night at our monthly star party.

Lulin is what you could call a "baby" comet. Being fairly young, it's still rich with colorful gasses and stuff - rather than being an old ice-ball, stripped of anything colorful. It actually has two prominent tails: one from the stuff being blown off it by solar winds, and a second trail of stuff it's leaving behind as it leaves our solar system.

But, of course Dory had different plans for us and so I got the chance to photograph something even more pretty.

All cleaned up:
Mom, Brian, and Dory:

Daddy and Daughter. Notice the shorts - the forecast is for 89 degrees today. Guess someone brought some sunshine with her:

Brian giving his new sister a kiss:

The only good picture we could get of Clayton:

A couple more of the "Star of the Night":

Mom and Dory should be home tomorrow. And maybe I can try to catch some pics of fast-moving Lulin before she's out of sight. But not to worry, she'll be back in another couple thousand years.

The Doctor Said "How Much?!" . . .

. . . When the nurse announced "Ten pounds, seven ounces".

Yeah, so I haven't seen that many births, but Lisa sure makes pushing out a huge Monks baby look like home cannery or scrap-booking. Three sets of pushes and the nurse says "whoa, whoa, stop pushing!" and hits the call button for the doctor. Mean while, Dory isn't going to wait, and is head and shoulders out by the time the doc runs through the door. So the baby's healthy - born at 10:42 pm (water broke at 5pm) - nursing fine, sleeping a little, and Mom's doing great. But I'm sure no one's here to listen to my rambling - so here's what you're all waiting for:

And just so no one thinks we're making this stuff up:

Little Drummer Boy

Here is Clayton's latest craze. I found the bongos at a garage sale today, and chopsticks make good drumsticks.

Does he remind you of anyone?

And here is Brian wishing his Aunt Mary Anne happy birthday today!

I'm tickled pink!

Clayton knows his colors! It took some creativity on my part, but I finally know for sure that he does. Since he is still not talking much at all and does not point to things either, here's what I did:
I bought a set of 6 plastic 'sorting bowls' in the rainbow colors. Then we used our plastic 'busy bugs' with them (Discovery Toys, I love you). They are the same 6 colors and it worked great. Clayton was able to tell (at least a few times) which bugs went in which color bowl. And today . . . he did this!He matched all 6 dragonflies to the right colors! He likes the dragonflies best- I think it's because they resemble airplanes. Way to go, Clayton!!

I am happy not only that Clayton knows his colors, but that I was able to figure out how to recognize his ability. Each child is so different, and not every kid is going to learn or express themselves in the same way. I know he'll talk just fine one of these days, but until then let's hope I can keep finding ways to communicate with my Clayton-man!

Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

Thumbs Up goes to:

* The good people at Costco and Oriental Trading Company for your great customer service. I had to return stuff to both places this month and they were as nice as could be.

* Laura and Megan for the awesome baby shower on Monday! It was so much fun. I need to get some pictures from that.

* Google Earth, for showing us what our housing in South Dakota might look like.

* Clayton for going right down to sleep for the last several days, no fussing. Way to go, kid.

* Andrew for going the extra mile to help me today.

Thumbs Down goes to:

* The old lady in my church who has asked me every week for the past 5 weeks if I'm having twins. Seriously. I don't know if she is trying to be funny or if she honestly thinks I'm having twins and has memory problems. But it's getting old!

* Being far away from my family. It has been especially difficult for me this week because my Grandma is sick in the hospital and I HATE not being able to see her.

* The Icee machine at Sam's Club. I waited in line 15 minutes to get me a cherry Icee I'd been craving . . . and the machine was broken.

* Brian getting up at 5:00 am today and being uber-crabby all morning.

* My pregnancy brain. And my pregnancy not being over yet.

It's the thought that counts

Andrew has been planning for weeks to take the boys camping this weekend. The idea was to have father/son fun, and give Mommy a break. However, after I had some false labor Tuesday night, we decided that taking them away while I might go into labor was too risky. So he planned a backyard campout.Maybe it's because the campout was on Friday the 13th, but it just didn't go too well. Clayton threw a fit and refused to stay in the tent. After the temperatures being in the 60's-80's for a week, it dropped to the 20's last night. At 4:00 am Andrew decided it was too cold and came in the house with Brian- who then threw his own fit because he wanted to stay in the tent. Plus Clayton had already been up with me after having a bad nightmare. Finally everyone went back to sleep. All in all, not the most fun night for us . . . but it's okay. We will try another campout this summer.

Oh, and check out the flowers Andrew got me yesterday. What a great Valentine! Love ya sweetie.

Cool Beans!

One of Brian's favorite toys is our bean box. I got the idea from the ward nursery in Enid; every kid absolutely loved it. I even kinda like playing with it- there is something soothing about scooping and dumping the beans. I think you can make these with rice too. Anyway, it's just an underbed storage box, lots of dry beans and some scoops. Wa-la! A cool sensory-rich toy sure to please any toddler. Especially handy to have when the weather is bad and the kids can't play outside. Tonight the boys were playing nicely together (which is why I scrambled to get pictures and document such a rare event) and had a ball playing with the beans and their bulldozer/dump truck from Mor Mor and Grandpa. Please note however- it took a good 1 1/2 years before I could let Clayton really play with it. For a long time all he wanted to do was eat/throw the beans. I wouldn't recommend this for kids under 18 months. I also recommend keeping an old sheet with it to help cleanup go faster.

He is Dreaming of Space. Literally.

As you may have noticed, Andrew is thoroughly enjoying his astronomy hobby lately. He reads about it all the time, and has learned so much. His pictures are incredible. One thing you might not have known about Andrew is that he talks in his sleep. And apparently his head is still among the stars. Here is what our conversation sounded like at 2:30 this morning:

Andrew: (very excited, propped up on one elbow) "Let's build it! We can build one!"
Lisa: (sound asleep) "Wuuhhhh? Huhh?"
Andrew: (shaking Lisa's shoulder) "Let's build it!!"
Lisa: (not sure what century it is) "Build what??"
Andrew: A spaceship!
Lisa: (slightly more cognizant, realizing that her hubby is sound asleep) "You're asleep, aren't you."
Andrew: "Nooooooooo!!"
Lisa:"You want to build a spaceship, huh?"
Andrew: "NO-oooooooo!"
Lisa: "Oh. Well, what do you want to build?"
Andrew: "A telescope!"
Lisa: "You want to build a telescope?"
Andrew: "Noooooooo!!!"
Lisa: "Well what do you want to build??"
Andrew: (waking up, and realizing he's been talking in his sleep) "Nothing, nothing".
Lisa: "Are you still asleep?"
Andrew: "No, not now!"
Lisa: "Um, okay. Goodnight."

Andrew's sleep-talking used to wake me up a few times a week the first year we were married- after that I think I started tuning it out. At this point, it is just survival. I mean, aren't my big belly, little bladder and two toddlers bad enough in terms of disrupting my sleep? It is funny to me that I can (usually) sleep through him babbling, not to mention his/mine occasional snoring. But if one of the kids so much as sniffles- I am WIDE awake.

The Joy of Dirt

Only Clayton could go to the park for 30 minutes and come home looking like this. There was a HUGE mud puddle near the playground today- I managed to keep the boys occupied on the swings and slides for a good 20 minutes, but the second I looked away from him Clayton made a run for the puddle. And let's face it, a 36-week-preggo waddling is no match for a 2-year-old who sees a mud puddle! So Clayton ran straight in, and within seconds was sitting in it splashing up a storm. The puddle was so huge that I could not pull him out without getting ankle-deep in mud myself, which I really didn't want to do. Clayton thought it was hilarious that Mommy kept calling his name, but couldn't reach him. Twerp.

Finally he got close enough for me to grab him, and we made our way home. Brian, thankfully is pretty obedient and did not get in the puddle. Clayton was such a mess when we got home that I took off his clothes outside:

Yuck. Anyway, we did an impromptu bath in the downstairs bathroom- he was so dirty I didn't want to haul him upstairs. Oh well, at least he had fun.

10 Pet Peeves

Here is a fun tag. My top ten pet peeves (in no particular order).

1. People who park at the Walmart/grocery store entrance. This bugs me SO much. I do not care if you are in your car waiting for someone and the car is running. Your car is blocking the whole way, and it is illegal. Do you suppose that the rest of us like to park 1/4 mile away?? No, but we do it because THAT'S WHAT YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO DO.

2. Flaky people posting/replying on Craigslist. Craigslist is a wonderful thing, and the majority of my transactions have been with good people. Someone wants to sell, someone wants to buy- win/win! But there are way too many flakes who post on Craigslist, or reply to my post, and then don't check their email for a week. Or people who leave their post up for weeks after the item is sold. C'mon!

3. People with a sense of entitlement. These are the people who have a deep-rooted belief that they deserve Everything they ever wanted . . . just because. No, you don't deserve a mansion and cars and toys just because you want them. No. Really. You don't. Of course, I run into about 99% fewer 'entitled' people now that I'm not teaching middle/high school anymore!

4. Kids' toys that are poorly designed. Sometimes I wonder if some toys were field tested at all! Do they even care if it is durable, cleanable, usable, interesting, educational? I think I could be a great toy-design consultant.

5. Kids' shoes that are so hard to put on. See above. But that is what I get for buying shoes without trying them on the boys' first. I'm learning.

6. Whining. I hear way too much. It is bad enough in a toddler, unendurable in teens/adults!

7. Crummy garage sales. I drove all the way out to your house to have the chance to look at a few overpriced, unorganized, dirty old clothes, dishes and junk piled on the ground? Gee, thanks.

8. My pregnancy brain. It is driving me absolutely batty. I forget so many things and I can't think clearly. I don't know if it's because I'm having a girl, or because I have two kids to chase, but it's definitely worse this time around. Andrew joked that now I can understand just how his brain works! Ha ha.

9. Computer Problems. I am so impatient and easily frustrated with computer/internet/printer problems. HATE it.

10. Stickers left on opened DVD/CD cases. I have to peel every bit of the security stickers off, I just can't leave it there.

I would love to read this on your blog if anyone else wants to give it a try. I actually feel a bit better after that venting!
